can we talk about the ups strike can we PLEASE talk about the ups strike

a screenshot of a tweet from vox, reading: "A 10-day UPS strike would cost the economy more than $7 billion and be the costliest work stoppage in at least a century, according to a new study by Anderson Economic Group, which researches labor disruptions." below it is a link to vox's article, titled: "A UPS Strike? In This Economy?" the image attached to the link is of a picketer holding a brown, yellow, and white sign that is partially cropped. the sign reads: "JUST PRACTICING FOR A JUST CONTRACT" behind the man is a large inflatable pig, dressed as a capitalist/exec holding a bag marked with a $ in one hand-- hoof-- and strangling a figure dressed like a ups driver in the other.ALT
a screenshot of a tweet from @Left_Voice that reads: "A reminder that many UPS workers in New York, the country's most expensive city, earn just $15.50 an hour. You can't pursue your passions when you can barely make ends meet. #StrikeReady" the tweet quoted below it is from the official ups twitter, reading: "College? Cooking? Entrepreneurship? Our industry-leading pay & benefits allow our people to pursue their passions. From healthcare coverage, retirement pensions, tuition assistance... the list goes on. But, we'll let our people tell the story in their own words. ⬇" below that is a still from the video linked with ups' tweet, but it's been cropped.ALT
a screenshot of a tweet from @BenFredericks, reading: "As a fired UPS working still trying to get my job back, I stand in full solidarity with the righteous fight for a $25/hour minimum starting wage, particularly for warehouse workers who bust their asses in sweatshop conditions. #strike #Equality #25orStrike" the tweet quoted below is from @LuigiWMorris (who also tweeted the video of the practice picket from within the ups warehouse) reading, "UPS part-timers are ready to strike, and we are joined by other union and community members who are ready to stand in solidarity with us ✊🪧 @Teamsters @804_local" below is a group photo of members of Left Voice, the DSA and ALU, and the Teamsters. four people are holding up signs, two that are the same, reading: "JUST PRACTICING FOR A JUST WAGE" the man in the center holds a sign that reads: "$25/HOUR MIN OR STRIKE" on the right side of the group a person wearing a hat is holding a sign over their head that reads: "REINSTATE FIRED WORKER ACTIVISTS UNCONDITIONALLY"ALT
screenshot of a tweet that reads: "Love to see it 🪧 If UPS doesn’t meet our demands by August 1, it won't be practice anymore, and we will go on strike! Thanks for all the support and solidarity, we can hear and feel it from inside the warehouse. @Teamsters @Local804T" below it is a still from the video attached to the tweet, taken from inside the ups customer center and warehouse in canarsie, brooklyn, looking out onto the parking lot. a fence, the hood of a delivery truck, and a stoplight are partially obstructing the view of the 7/14/2023 practice picketALT

i know since writers and actors are already striking thats gonna take up most of the news space on social media but like. ups has until july 31st to meet the teamster’s demands and if not then theyre going on the biggest strike against a single corporation since the early 1900s. the uaw (auto manufacturers union) contract is up this fall, and i believe the alu (amazon labor union) is as well. there’s a huge possibility that they might strike as well, depending on how long the ups strike lasts.

im seeing a lot of talk about hollywood going down but i want to see more talk about labor rights and working class solidarity across the board… like A Lot of shit is about to go down

we’re about to see a lot more propaganda by more than just hollywood, we’re about to see a lot of bullshit political moves on local, state, and federal levels. dont fall for it. workers have power.

When I was a kid, my dad hated when I hung up anything on my walls. My art, band posters, movie posters, anything. Not with taxks, not with tape (it “ripped the paint off”) not with anything. At one point in 5th or 6th grade he came in my room and found me hanging up a Diary of a Wimpy Kid poster with tacos and he was like “EVERY HOLE YOU PUT IN THE WALL TAKES $10 OFF THE VALUE OF THE HOUSE.” so when I was mad at him, I’d insert tacks into the wall in places he couldn’t easily see just out of spite. Whoever owns the house now is probably wondering about it.

bro didn’t even know you could just fill holes with toothpaste 💀

I know this is about an owned house (that you should be touching up and repainting the walls of before reselling anyway???) but for ppl who are paranoid about putting holes in rental walls: don’t be.
Put up posters. Shelving if you need it. Have hanging plants. Invest in a studfinder. Spackle kits are cheap and everywhere now, or you can use white toothpaste, glue, or even soft air-dry clay to fill holes.
Scuffs and rub marks are considered normal wear and tear and landlords can’t charge you for them. Most places will have you fill holes but will have to repaint between tenants anyway, so even if the spackle doesn’t match the walls, it’s not a big deal. Check your state laws about what is considered normal wear and tear. Most states have laws covering everything from paint to flooring. For instance, in my state, carpet that is 3+ years old is considered past its normal life cycle and therefore any damage to it cannot be charged for because the landlord/management is expected to put in new carpeting.

Before any move-out, check local laws considering paint, flooring, light fixtures, appliances, etc. Landlords and management companies make BANK on people not knowing that they’re paying for paint rubs that they’re painting over anyway and carpet that has been paid for 6 times over.

Reminder: they’re never ever ever ever going to give you your security deposit back no matter what you do. have fun with life.

Actually, if your landlord isn’t giving your security deposit back without good reason (in new york, they gave to give you a itemized receipt listing why they deducted from it) bring them to small claims court. Don’t let the bloodsuckers get away with your money.

Our last landlord tried keeping all the deposit and charging is for more. When we moved in, I took a whole lotta pictures. I took pics when we moved out and did my research regarding local laws and looked at how frequently tenants win in small claims court here. Over 80% of cases are in favor of tenants.

So I wrote a very professional letter to the landlord and property management company. I provided this information and sent a CD with copies of before and after pics of the place with notes, like the place hadn’t been cleaned before we moved in, there was a hole from the second bathroom to the outside, large enough to fit a fat raccoon, husky fur everywhere, nails, hooks, and tacks in the walls, footprints on the ceiling, human hair on the walls and ceilings of the main bathroom.

I informed them they had 60 days to return our deposit or we will take them to small claims court. Local laws state that if a tenant wins, we receive 3x the deposit, and the landlord pays all court costs and fees. 58 days after sending the letter, we received our deposit with an apology for “confusion.”

These people are dependent on ignorance. Be aware, be knowledgeable, and make them afraid.

I have OCD and with that comes quasi-hallucinations, and I grew up watching a ton of horror films so some of the worst of mine are the standard white skin/black hair demon girl type shit.

However, because a lot of them are based on horror film I have found comfort in doing things that “go against” horror films and being like “see? This could never happen.”

(It’s irrational. I know that. But shut up. This is how I cope.)

For example: I started hearing garbled whispering from beneath my table, so I started playing the muppets sound track. Because they would never play Movin’ Right Along when the protagonist is about to get attacked. That won’t happen. Disney, who owns the muppets, wouldn’t give them the rights.

And it fucking worked.

Being a long time Tumblr user makes you privy to a lot of deep magic because you were there when it was written. Like the old trend of blogs having autoplay in them. You would check a blog and music would start blasting. Over your music. As if the Geneva Convention wasn’t real.

I love that this post doesn’t include the actual text of his tweet, just his impending presence. This is the visual equivalent of a scare chord.

Some of you might remember a couple of years ago when Scarlett Johansson sued Disney because she was making significantly less money for Black Widow than was guaranteed in her contract because so many more people watched it on streaming than in theaters, how there was a massive misinformation campaign from Disney that a ton of people on this website (and Twitter and other social media) bought into: That she was a greedy bitch who didn’t respect people who needed to stay at home during the pandemic (I believe the word “ableist” was thrown around with aplomb) as opposed to someone who just wanted to be paid what she was owed. What was literally in her contract!!! And where everyone who took more than a couple minutes to actually look into and think about the situation could figure out that her issue wasn’t with streaming itself, but with how little streaming was allowed to get away with paying her and other actors. But of course, a lot of people just saw the chance to dunk on a rich woman, and didn’t think about it beyond readying some snarky tags and hit reblog. And in doing so, threw their support behind a much wealthier, greedier studio head who is already using similar language to describe the current strike.

Anyway we’re going to see a lot of that from studios now, especially now that actors have joined with the WGA and it’s easier to sell them as rich and greedy than writers, because of this cultural stereotype we have of all Hollywood actors as celebrities. Don’t fall for it. SAG-AFTRA represents people like Tom Cruise and ScarJo but it also represents the kind of people who played a Borg in two episodes of Star Trek: Voyager in 1997 or who had one line in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel as an enthusiastic audience member. Most actors are not crazy wealthy, and in fact, if you’re a big TV fan (especially older TV and genre TV) that likely includes some actor names that you know, who played supporting roles in your fav shows, or who were even a star in something but haven’t done anything major since. The AFTRA side also represents people like radio broadcasters. But even beside that, all workers deserve to be fairly compensated for the work they do, and the threat of replacing them with AI, or real actors being required to sign contracts to allow their likenesses to be used by AI forever without paying them, is an existential threat to acting as a profession in general. The actors are in the right. The writers are in the right. The studios are in the wrong. The studios have exploited new technology to get away with horrifying labor practices for years and their feet need to be put to the fire. Circulate the articles about how poorly the Orange is the New Black cast was compensated for making one of the defining shows of the early streaming boom, and of the studios saying they want to force writers to starve and lose their homes. Don’t get distracted by propaganda aping progressive-sounding language about “wealthy celebrities.” Focus on the real enemy, the truly greedy fat cats who care more about money than people and art: the studios.
